How Do I Apply for the NDIS? A Step-By-Step Guide

Main Content

Navigating something new especially when it’s as big and important as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel overwhelming at first. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. Whether you’re applying for yourself or someone you support, we’re here to guide you through the process step by step.

At Interchange, we believe that everyone deserves to live a good life, with the right supports and people around them. And the NDIS can help make that happen.

First things first – what is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that provides funding for people with permanent and significant disability to access the supports they need. These supports might include help with daily living, therapies, equipment, social and community participation, or even support to build skills for independence.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:

  • Be under 65 years old when you apply

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa

  • Have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your ability to take part in everyday activities

You can check your eligibility using the NDIS Access Checklist.

1. If you’re aged 9 or older:

You can apply in a few different ways:

  • Contact a Local Area Coordinator (LAC): Your LAC can guide you through the whole process and act as your main point of contact. Find your nearest LAC here.

  • No LAC in your area? Call the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 to find out your options.

2. If your child is younger than 9:

We encourage you to speak with an early childhood partner first. They can offer early supports (without needing an NDIS plan), and help you decide if the NDIS is the right next step for your child.

How do I apply?

Here’s how to get started:

1. Gather your information

You’ll need documents that explain how your disability impacts your daily life. This might include reports from your doctor, therapist, or other health professionals.

Try to focus on:

  • What support you need

  • How often you need it

  • What happens if you don’t get that support

Our Customer Support Team at Interchange can help you understand what kind of information to include. You don’t have to do this alone.

2. Submit an Access Request

There are a couple of ways to do this:

  • Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 to make a verbal Access Request

  • Download the Access Request Form from the NDIS website and send it in by email or post

If you’re more comfortable talking things through, calling can be a good option.

3. Wait for a decision

Once you’ve submitted your application, the NDIA (the agency that runs the NDIS) will assess it. This can take a few weeks, depending on how complex your situation is. If you’re found eligible, congratulations! You’re on your way to developing your first NDIS plan.

4. Plan your supports

Once approved, you’ll be contacted to set up a planning meeting. This is where you’ll talk about your goals and the supports you need. You can bring someone with you—like a family member, friend, or one of our Interchange team members—to help you feel more confident.

This plan is all about you, and it should reflect your life, your goals, and your choices.
