Independence through Wheelchair

Sharon’s Journey to Independence through her new Wheelchair.

For over five years, Sharon has called Diversity South’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) accommodation – her home.

A place where she enjoyed the great outdoors and her love for nature. However, a growing concern began to impact her independence — frequent and unexplained falls. These falls not only posed a physical risk but also threatened her sense of independence.

Despite thorough investigations by specialists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, and functional assessments, no clear cause was found. The falls persisted, leading to painful injuries and affecting her mental health. Sharon loved going out, and this challenge seemed to take that away from her, diminishing her spirits.

Determined to find a solution, her support team continued advocating for Sharon, pushing for answers. After multiple attempts, they successfully secured a wheelchair for her — a game-changer in her life. Now, Sharon explores the outdoors safely, free from fear of injury, and continues doing what she loves without limits. Her wheelchair has become a symbol of her regained independence, allowing her to navigate her world with confidence and joy.

Sharon’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and person-centered supportensuring that every individual gets what they need to live life fully. Her story highlights the importance of advocating for oneself and seeking the necessary tools, like a wheelchair, to maintain independence. Through the support of her support team and the use of her wheelchair, Sharon has reclaimed her freedom and continues to thrive in her community.
