Individuality
What exactly is Individuality? How important is it for you to be treated according to your individual wants and needs? Let’s take a closer look at what Individuality means.
The key to be successful in our role, is to treat each person according to their specific wishes and goals and not necessarily in a group. Let the individual be who they truly want to be. – Debra, Support Worker in Mandurah
What is Individuality?
Individuality is defined as the unique characteristics and traits that make someone one of a kind. A habit of thinking and acting in one’s own distinctive manner and as one believes appropriate, not being heavily influenced by others. Being able to live and act highlighting one’s true nature, where the individual feels strong, safe and meant to be is crucial to a happy life.
How can Individuality make someone feel?
Encouraging someone to celebrate their individuality can boost self-esteem and confidence. Embracing individuality is essential for personal happiness and always works in favour of achieving personal goals. Trying to hide or change who we are or being pushed into an alternate direction lessens a person’s sense of self-worth, creativity, focus and ambition.
Why is Individuality so important for support services?
Individualised services are person centred supports and give people the chance to live the life they choose and include things that truly matter to them. Individualised services go hand in hand with the person’s beliefs, interests and characteristics and avoids pushing someone into another direction. It guarantees flexibility, enhances a natural way of supporting someone and encourages personal development. Individualised services are led and directed by the person receiving them, towards achieving personal goals.
